Windows Server 2016 end of support: what it means for your security systems

Last reviewed [05/11/2026]

Microsoft ends support for Windows Server 2016 on 12 January 2027. After that date, it receives no more security updates unless the organisation pays for Extended Security Updates.

If your security systems run on Windows Server 2016, the security software needs to be upgraded in conjunction with the server and operating system migration. We can help you plan it.

More than a Windows upgrade

Security software vendors publish which operating systems and database versions each release supports. Moving a security server off Windows Server 2016 means planning the security software upgrade in conjunction with the server and operating system migration, then testing everything connected to it.

As your integrator, we manage your security systems on your behalf and plan the migration with your IT team.

Extended Security Updates

Extended Security Updates can keep Windows Server 2016 supported for up to three years, at a cost. Unless there is a specific reason to stay on Windows Server 2016, we recommend migrating.

Cyber Essentials

Cyber Essentials requires the operating system and all associated software in scope to be licensed and supported. Unsupported software must be removed.

Frequently asked questions

Will my security system stop working after 12 January 2027?

No. It keeps running, but Windows Server 2016 stops receiving security updates unless Extended Security Updates are in place.

Can we just upgrade Windows on the security server?

Not on its own. The security software needs to be upgraded in conjunction with the server and operating system migration, so that it is supported on the new version.

Can we buy Extended Security Updates instead?

Yes, at a cost, for up to three years. Unless there is a specific reason to stay on Windows Server 2016, we recommend migrating.
