  • Reduction in events
  • Annual savings from not losing as much equipment
  • Better CQC compliance score
  • Improved scores in worker safety satisfaction surveys
  • Reporting on compliance automatically

“Evolution helped us change how we think about our security system. They knew that keeping patients and staff safe takes more than just technology; it also takes a real grasp of clinical settings. Our CQC rating went from “Inadequate” to “Good.”

FAQs About Healthcare Security

Healthcare security must meet strict regulatory and safeguarding requirements. Evolution provides compliant solutions designed around the needs of hospitals, clinics and healthcare facilities.

CQC assesses security under the Safe domain - specifically Regulation 12 (Safe Care and Treatment) and Regulation 13 (Safeguarding). They want to see premises security that protects patients from abuse and avoidable harm, appropriate access control to clinical areas and medicine storage, systems that help manage aggressive behaviour, and proper safeguarding procedures.

Your security systems should generate audit trails and incident documentation that support CQC inspection evidence. When inspectors visit, you want to be able to demonstrate compliance easily rather than scrambling for records.

Infant security protects newborns from abduction - every parent's nightmare and a real risk that hospitals have to manage. Modern systems use tags attached to infants (typically on the ankle) that trigger alarms if removed or if the baby approaches protected exits. Staff need to authenticate before they can remove or adjust tags. Access control integrates so doors lock automatically during an alarm condition. CCTV covers maternity areas with appropriate recording.

The good news is that modern systems have moved past the clinical, prison-like feel of older wristband approaches - they provide genuine protection without undermining family bonding.

Mental health settings need specialist design that addresses both patient safety and staff protection. Ligature-resistant hardware throughout patient areas is non-negotiable. Access control needs to prevent unauthorised entry while also preventing patient elopement. Discreet observation capability supports clinical monitoring. Anti-barricade doors matter in high-risk areas. Staff panic alarms with immediate location identification let help arrive quickly.

The challenge is that security design has to balance therapeutic environment requirements with genuine safety needs - and this absolutely requires working closely with clinical teams who understand the specific patient population risks.

Violence against healthcare staff is a serious and growing problem, particularly in A&E, mental health settings, and anywhere staff work alone. If your current panic system is not working, the issues are usually location accuracy (responders do not know where to go), activation difficulty (staff cannot reach or operate the alarm in a crisis), or response coordination (alarms trigger but nothing happens fast enough).

Modern systems address all three: location tracking shows exactly where the alert originated, wearable devices can be activated without reaching for a wall panel, and integration with security teams and CCTV means immediate, coordinated response. We have helped trusts significantly reduce response times and, more importantly, reduce the severity of incidents because help arrives before situations escalate.

Very urgent. Security must never delay emergency treatment. If a cardiac arrest team cannot get through a door, or resuscitation equipment cannot reach a patient because of access restrictions, that is a patient safety incident waiting to happen. Clinical override capability allows authorised clinical staff to bypass normal access restrictions in genuine emergencies while maintaining audit trails.

This is not optional in healthcare settings - it is fundamental to safe system design. If your current system lacks this capability, it needs to be addressed as a priority, not scheduled for the next budget cycle. We can often implement override capability as an upgrade to existing systems rather than wholesale replacement.

Start by understanding exactly what documentation CQC expects under Regulations 12 and 13. Incident logs, access audit trails, staff training records, equipment maintenance logs, and policy documents are typically required. If the documentation does not exist, be honest about gaps and focus on demonstrating your remediation plan. If documentation exists but is scattered across multiple systems and paper records, the priority is consolidating it into an accessible format.

Going forward, integrated security platforms that automatically generate compliance documentation eliminate this problem - incident reports, access logs, and audit trails are captured and stored systematically. We have helped trusts prepare for CQC inspections and can support rapid documentation improvement where needed.

A&E is already a stressful environment for patients, and heavy-handed security makes it worse. The approach needs to be effective but discreet. Controlled access to clinical areas prevents unauthorised movement without creating visible barriers in waiting areas. Staff panic alarms should be wearable and unobtrusive, not obvious wall panels. CCTV coverage deters aggression but cameras should not dominate sightlines. Behavioural detection can alert staff to escalating situations before violence occurs.

The physical environment matters too - better sightlines, appropriate lighting, and considered layout reduce risk. The goal is security that clinical staff trust and patients barely notice.

Healthcare security is specialist work, and generic security contractors often underestimate the complexity. Look for demonstrable NHS and healthcare experience, not just general credentials. Do they understand CQC requirements, clinical workflows, infection control implications? Can they design systems with clinical override capability? Do they have experience with the specific challenges of A&E, mental health, maternity? Check their approach to implementation - healthcare facilities cannot simply shut down for installation work.

Ask about integration with clinical systems, not just standalone security platforms. Service level agreements should reflect healthcare realities: 24/7 operations, critical response requirements, and the consequences of system failure in clinical environments.

We have been providing security solutions to healthcare facilities for 30 years, working with NHS trusts, private hospitals, mental health facilities, and care settings. We understand that healthcare security has to support clinical operations, not obstruct them. We design systems with clinical override because we know security can never delay treatment. We specify touchless access where infection control matters. We provide staff protection that is effective but discreet.

Our teams understand CQC requirements and design for compliance from the outset. We work around clinical schedules, implementing changes without disrupting patient care. And we maintain long-term relationships with healthcare clients because continuity and reliability matter in environments where security systems are genuinely safety-critical.
